Why does my cat bite visitors

To correct the problem, never play rough with your cat , but more importantly, institute regular sessions of Play Therapy. Petting-related overstimulation aggression is frustrating and frightening. There may be a pain issue, or a bad memory, but whatever the reason, very few cats attack without warning, though it may seem that way. The trick is to STOP before the cat feels it necessary to take the next step. Never try to restrain the cat!

Often this innocent victim is another cat or pet in the home, or the guardian. Thereafter, the mere sight of the victim brings up all that upset all over again, and the cat continues to attack unprovoked. If the issue is between two cats, the best course of action in this case is complete separation followed by gradual reintroduction, as if the two had never met.

But fear aggression can occur in any situation where the cat feels both threatened and trapped. When the cat is sitting calmly and not nipping, then give the cat what they want as a reward. Above all, any type of punishment for biting is not recommended. Always respond calmly and do not further escalate the situation.

Research shows that punishment, including yelling, squirt bottles, scruffing and physically hitting your cat is not effective and the cat does not learn from it.

The cat is unable to make the connection that the punishment is the consequence of him biting. You should ignore any unwanted behavior and praise good behavior. Any type of negative reaction will only damage your relationship with your cat further.

To establish dominance over your cat you need to be firm but kind. There is a fine balance. If you are too soft your cat will claim the dominance and walk all over you, metaphorically speaking. However, if you go too far it will resent you and may put up hostile resistance. Regarding going too far, some of the consequences might include your cat lashing out with aggression which will be as bad as it attacking your friends.

Which is a worse position than you started with. You should not avoid letting your friends visit as a way to avoid your cat playing up. Its your house so you do as you please. But, it is worth being honest with your friends, before they arrive, so they understand what your cat might do. This way, if they agree to still come round they will not be shocked and feel betrayed. Also, thsi will allow you to work on improving your cats responses to them. And, hopefully, in time it will stop behaving in this manner.

If your cat is acting hostile what about dirty looks? Thsi is because it could be misinterpreted, by your cat, as a hostile response. Which could lead to it lashing out.

You can try getting your guest to help more on this later , redirect their aggression by offering them a treat, Or you can try using a pheromone collar or toy to try and alter her mood to stop this aggression. Now that you know a few ways to stop this, let me go on to explain why your cat might have switched behavior, why your guests can stress them out, how to prevent it from happening, and much more.

Keep reading…. Now that you understand why this has happened you may be intrigued to understand why this happened in the first place. The reality is there are several different reasons that could have triggered this behavior. Simple things like big sounds can overexcite your cat. The reality is, different cats have different ways of dealing with situations. There is a chance that your cat is genuinely scared of new people. This could be because of an issue with a stranger they may have had in their past, that you do not know about.

This can be hard to see at first, because it may only manifest when you have a new guest that comes to your house. Cats have a natural tendency to mark their territory. And, this involves actual people, not just objects. Watch Dr. Some get fearful and defensive. A normally placid pussy cat can turn terrifying when facing unfamiliar visitors of the human or canine kind. They can even be dangerous. Bad behavior has to stop ASAP. Punishment can work fast but reward-based training delivers happy, well-behaved dogs.

Has a new dog stirred the political pot at your house? Wanna avoid the brawls? Helping dogs who freak-out when home alone is complicated. Improvement requires lots of changes but do you have to completely ignore as you leave and return?

Kitties are so sweet and gentle. Well, most are.
