On one card I was told wouldn't go through and I should contact the card company and verify the card and balance and call back. I called back the next day and was told that card was fine, however, two other cards were declined. When I checked I found that each card had a pending charge of odd amounts, i.
When I asked the rep why the cards weren't used for the full amounts I was told they are charged based on where the merchandise comes out of.
If the merchandise comes from a store the charge is taken for the store, if the merchandise comes from the warehouse then the charge is taken for the warehouse. In the meantime, the gift cards were locked and couldn't be used because of the REI pending charges. And my order could not be processed unless I used another from of payment.
This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. The rep told me this is the fault of the gift card bank and I needed to contact them and try to rectify the problem and call back. I ended up talking to three different reps and each told me something different but all blamed the gift card company. In speaking with the reps reminded me of calling tech support for a computer software issue and being told I need to contact the manufacturer of the computer.
I have made numerous purchases in their stores in received outstanding customer service. As a matter of fact all my camping and backpacking gear is from REI. After the "Go around" with the reps I decided to cancel my order. In calling back to cancel I was told it can't be done as I have to wait 72 hours for the order to cancel itself.
That was "par" for the course! I will never be purchasing anything from REI's online sales. I not going to pay money to be treated this poorly. Great store for all your hiking and especially if you are planning a fishing trip with the guys. Plenty of fishing gear to choose from. From poles to fishing hooks to sleeping bags to dry food. To Starters for cooking. All ages girls included too. The employees were amazing and very sensitive to our needs and help request.
They spent their time finding and sharing info of the products. The most intimate relationship ever I had as compared to Dick's and Academy Sport stores. Great customer service. Plenty of items to choose from with varying prices. If they don't have it, they will find it for you if possible. Items range from hiking, camping, clothes, utensils, boots and all equipment needed for most outdoor activities. Great customer service and knowledgeable personnel who explained and shared experiences with customer, me.
Gave examples of practical application of some products and comparison in quality vs price. Helpful in decision making of products purchased. REI is my go to sporting goods store. High quality products, knowledgeable and therefore helpful staff and reasonable prices. Their return policy is incomparable and their sales are the best! I have been a member of this coop for over 25 years and recommend them without hesitation!
I can get lost here. My husband is always thrilled with the gifts I get for him. REI has a huge variety of sporting goods. The staff is always helpful and courteous. It's also easy for me to maneuver around the store as I'm disabled and most times use a walker. REI has a good variety of products for the outdoor person. They are a bit pricey though. From my point of view their merchandise is "upper middle of the road". Great quality but not enough depth of product selection. As I acted in good faith, I have contacted both REI Customer Service and REI management in an effort to obtain reimbursement for the return shipping charges which is routinely offered by their competitors.
I have not received the courtesy of a response. Placed a fairly large order and then was charged the day the order was placed and again when it shipped.
After calling Rei, then bank, then rei again I just get a sorry. Nevermind the double charge screwed me on funds that I'm still waiting to be refunded for. Will no longer support a business that doesn't care about its members. I received a holiday gift that was a duplicate of one I had purchased some time ago from REI. I tried to exchange it or return it for credit. I did not have a receipt so the staff at the store and at corporate each told me that I should regift it to someone else.
Not what I expected from a store I have been a member of for decades and that used to have exceptional customer service. The lesson for me is not to buy or request a gift from there any longer. Recently my partner and I went to REI. We each purchased items separately on our credit cards. Both of us were double-charged. I have a vague recollection of this happening with REI almost a year ago as well on our last visit. At the time, I thought it was a fluke.
This time, with both of us being charged double on the same day, we first called our credit card companies; the charges were immediately reversed. Then we called REI and got a "Sorry that happened! Thanks for your feedback. He did have a phone fixed, not cell , but was so bad about timely return of calls that we had to catch him in his office irregular hours. He loved to make appointments to visit here, shoot the breeze and tell jokes, and finally pull out his order book.
His product was great, and prices were better, but he was just too much trouble. He, like REI, lost his position as default supplier due to poor communications. He will now have to earn it again by the expensive process of bring his performance significantly above that of his competitors, living down our perception of him as being below average perception is a separate issue from reality , and proving himself to a skeptical former customer over a trial period.
REI, as a first-class marketing outfit, knows that charging money to order online, then giving poor service, is costing them a string of sales way out into the future from each alienated online customer. And that sales revenue is going into competitors' coffers, where it strengthens the competitors' position. That's just bad strategy. Watch for a sharp improvement at REI.
Maybe the new "outlet" product is the start of it. They must to some linking of the online ordering system with inventory, as I just tried to order 4 items and one was out of stock. They will ship the othr three and backorder the 4th. I have no problem with that.
It was fast, painless, and I've very pleased. REI does update the inventory of their on-line datebase, but only once a day is it synched up with the "real" ordering database. That leaves the 24 hour gray period for orders to slip by. Also, to counter what REI told me about ordering a "hot" item over the phone, instead. Their web-site rei-outlet. The customer service reps at headquarters don't seem to be trained in dealing with the on-line customer service problems.
The one rep I spoke with stated that she never has seen the web site. Not a single problem. In fact, the one item that I ordered that was out of stock, they upgraded for no extra cost Instead of an cheaper pillow I got a nice one that I like much better.

All, Beware when you order on-line are REI. It was incredible. Sorry to hear of this exception to the rule. Glenn Stauffer. Mark Wilden. Charlie Goodrich.
