What happens if you remove salt bridge

The purpose of a salt bridge is not to move electrons from the electrolyte, rather to maintain charge balance because the electrons are moving from one half cell to the other.

Without the salt bridge, the solution in the anode compartment would become positively charged and the solution in the cathode compartment would become negatively charged, because of the charge imbalance, the electrode reaction would quickly come to a halt, therefore It helps to maintain the flow of electrons from the oxidation half cell to a reduction half cell.

Just like cutting a wire to break the circuit, removing the salt bride would stop the flow of electrons. The battery wouldn't recharge because the ions would stay in solution and the solid metals would stay as they are.

I think the solution ions moving across the bridge. Salt bridges have to be designed in such a way as the ions don't interfere with the half-cell reactions.

If the ions in salt bridge are depleted all migrated into the half-cells , ions from the reactions can migrate between the half-cells. If these ions interfere with the reaction in the new container, voltage will change.

But, in the construction of long lasting batteries, salt bridges have to be carefully crafted. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google. Sign up using Facebook. Sign up using Email and Password. Post as a guest Name.
