Before heading in, battle the kid hiding in a pile of ash near the door. Inside the shop, the owner will give you a Soot Sack. The idea is to walk around in enough ash to get soot adequate for making a variety of items. The soot is measured in steps. To get it, go through the gray-colored tall grass, turning it green.
