Comments are disabled for a week. April 26, Gawker launches a new system powered by a secret algorithm that promotes the higher-quality, more relevant comments. The system is code-named Powwow. June 4, Gawker tweaks Powwow comments again , making a series of user-interface changes that are boring to write about here.
June 27, Gawker begins rolling out Powwow to all of its sites , rebranding it confusingly as Kinja. I take that as a yes, Denton is satisfied. Dan Neil.

Public access television channels are an untapped resource for building local journalism Instead of letting public access channels wither due to commercial market fluctuations, we should publicly fund and expand the precious communication infrastructure that access media offers.
On Monday, we posted an open letter to the management of Gawker Media, our parent company, regarding an ongoing problem that we here at Jezebel could no longer tolerate: horribly violent rape gifs that were consistently appearing in our comments.
For months, we asked Gawker Media HQ for help with the trolling — but despite recurring discussions, Joel Johnson, the company's editorial director, didn't fast track a solution. Now, however, we have Gawker HQ's attention; we're finally at the top of to-do list.
The trolling — which, in the wake of our post, spread to other sites in our network to our colleagues: oof, really sorry about that — has been nothing short of a nightmare. You've given us a stunning example of just how unfathomably ugly the internet can be. But you, Troll, also did this company a favor: you have forced Gawker Media to give the problem — the state of our commenting system and specifically its failures — the attention it deserves.
You've actually done some good around here, Troll! Gawker Media's leadership from both tech and editorial has been working around the clock to get both a short-term solution in place as well as making larger systematic changes necessary to improve the commenting environment across all of our sites. The short-term solution is what you saw yesterday: We disabled media uploads images, gifs, videos across all the comments on all of our sites. We've also scrubbed all the offending media from previous troll posts; that filth no longer lives on our server.
A little generosity is in order. This last point is perhaps the most important. It is imperative that we remember that the commenters on this site come from all age brackets, cultural backgrounds, maturity levels, education levels, and political and religious stripes.
Although the site's editors subscribe to what some might call more progressive points of view - and hell, we do not always agree with one another!
Our more vocal commenters shouldn't demand it either. Debating passionately but politely in the comments is one thing: piling on, belittling and mocking are another, and the latter does nothing to advance readers' knowledge or, for lack of a better term, change the hearts and minds of those you disagree with. Instead, it contributes to the much-mocked echo chamber on this site that we are determined to do away with. Last, But Not Least I have no doubt that this new commenting system will create confusion, frustration, and, for some, outrage — among both editors and commenters alike — for a period of time.
But we're excited about and committed to the new system, and ask that you please bear with us as we reorient ourselves in the service of making our already-vibrant and engaging threads even more so.
Leave them in the comments here, and we'll try to answer them or do a follow-up post as soon as we can. If you are seeing glitches, email them to us with an exact description of the problem, the type of computer and exact operating system you are using, as well as the browser you are viewing the site on.
Well, it appears that I can finally read the comments for a while, I had the impression that not only were the lowly Tier 2s going to be relegated to the loser bus, but denied access to comments at all. Not, of course, that anyone is going to wade through my mediocre contribution - but for goodness' sake, why on earth would I want to come and chitchat any place where I've been so clearly told I'm not wanted?
I may not comment often, but when I do, I generally take the time to give my contribution some thought. I have absolutely no interest in throwing that effort into a pool of greyed-out "mediocrity"; I'd prefer at least the illusion of open discourse. Incidentally, I did have enough followers to get myself a star, before all this nonsense, had I so chosen; not being particularly invested, either virtually or veritably, in class or caste systems, I hadn't bothered asking for it.
